I Love Wet T-Shirt Events

jwj-acl-fest-56862Last week-end, I went to the three day music festival in Austin, Texas, known as ACL. Something like 150 bands and eight stages. The second day it poured rain all day and was basically a wet T-shirt contest with a loud musical score. The third day the entire venue was a giant mud pit. I went from the soaring high of being back-stage during Jack White's sloungy rock set with Dead Weather to the lowest of lows being spit out into the crowd and the 8" deep mud pit. It was crazy fun. Around 50,000 fans were there, mud-dogging it, some naked, Woodstock style. That's 50,000 people slopping around in the mud for one thing: THE MUSIC. I love that and I feel good about life on this planet as long as this is happening.

How to Get Your Wildness Back

pan_childwallAll good hippies have read Tom Robbin’s “Jitterbug Perfume.” My all-time favorite character of fiction is Pan, who represents all things instinctual, primal, sexual and raw. There is a whole mythology to Pan which is fascinating but here’s my impression of Pan. Pan does whatever he wants. He is walking desire and he is satisfaction all in one body. He is totally in touch with his animal because he IS half animal. Pan smells bad because he doesn’t care and he emanates a lot of musk. He likes to walk up to drinking holes like ponds and streams in the woods because he knows that is where the naked virgin nymphs hang out. He likes to fuck them upon sight and they don’t really object. In fact, they can smell him coming from a mile away.

Pan eats whatever he wants from forest kill to buffet food from the banquets he crashes. He looks a little scary because his eyes are wild and he has stuff dripping off the weird patches of hair on his face. Pan is intoxicatingly vulgar, a real skank king.

Nobody sees Pan these days because of one simple reason. The thing that keeps Pan alive is our consciousness. In other words, when he disappears from our consciousness, he disappears. I am starting a universal campaign to bring Pan back in to high visibility. All we have to do is be aware (or beware) of Pan. The bumper sticker could read “Beware of Pan, You Don’t Know What You May Do.”

I get a happy and delicious feeling just thinking about him. He makes me do wild things such as:

-Turn off my phone for a whole day and do whatever I want

-Get on the back of a motorcycle with a stranger and go for a ride like I did last night

-Wear sexy clothes

-Talk to anyone who interests me

-Realize that life is here to insanely enjoy it

-Wear my giant furry Pan boots even when it is summertime in Austin and announce wherever I go “I am channeling Pan today and I may fuck you”

Have you seen him lately? Maybe you feel him when you listen to some ripping electric sex-on-a-stick guitar player. Or maybe when you run around in the woods naked. Or maybe when you just turn off your phone for a whole day and don’t do what you are supposed to do. Just keep your nose in the air and see if he is in your vicinity....

I May Get Loud

2009_it_might_get_loud_002I was having the kind of day today that felt like a quicksand bath. I had a horrible headache, felt clumsy in my body and was wondering why I thought I could ever write another book. I stumbled around town and then finally gave up all thoughts of working, working out or eating healthy. Instead I went to a theater and saw the movie “It might get a little loud” with Jimmy Page, Jack White and the guy from U2. Ten minutes in to it, I realized that half of the time we are hungry, it is not for food. It is for a higher vibration, which you can sometimes get from food, but that is only part of it. This movie fed my being on every level. As an artist, a creative person, a lover of music, a lover, a rebel, a student, a teacher, an ageless creature, a spirit. It passed the heart leaping test one hundred fold, my heart was lurching forward at the communion of vibration with others who live for and on inspiration.

An elegantly smoldering and musically intoxicating Jimmy Page talks about how it begins as a creative spark, catches fire and then burns bright. We KNOW that place and live for it. Everything else pales by it. It is the energetic addiction.

Why am I so in love with the electric guitar these days?

It’s the amplification. Artists have this deep need to connect with others. It doesn’t matter if it’s through music or words or painting or circus balloons. But the electric guitar is the physical instrument of amplification. Pure vibration, Loud. With your hair messed up.

I can’t get enough Jimi Hendrix, Rick Dufay, Doyle Bramhall II, Cream, BB King, the list goes on. Just can’t get enough.

This is the Most Fun I Can Have Today

The Now Screen

Movie-ScreenWhat if

what you saw in front of you was defined as YOUR SCREEN. It is your movie that you are watching every second. Wait, let’s get even more specific. Your body is a projector and your eyes are the rays that are projecting the moving image. Everything that you see, in your field of vision is the screen.

What if

that is ALL you could play with: what is on that screen. You cannot look at past scenes or future scenes but only that which you can see. All of your amusement, information and engagement could only be from this screen, THE NOW FIELD.

What if

the only opportunities that existed were available or accessible through this NOW SCREEN.

What if

you knew that you would never be bored, in lack, unsurprised or wanting because the NOW FIELD could never disappoint. But you can’t cheat either. You cannot let thoughts of lack or disappointment or anxiety or fear in unless they were presenting themselves on the NOW SCREEN. Then you would know exactly what to do.

Now, just plug in some good music from the universal DJ known as “Shuffle” on you iphone for a soundtrack and see what shows up!!

An Invitation to All Musicians Out There

50266_294203784363_1681149_nThe romance started on my birthday a few days ago. I blocked out the world and plugged into music, completely. I hit SHUFFLE on my I Tunes so that the universal DJ could do it’s thing and play songs that matched the vibration I was in of profound love, bliss, private revolution and sacred soulfulness. My day was a movie with a soundtrack of songs like early CSNY (heavy on the Neil Young), “War” by Lennon and “Give You My Heart” by Doyle Bramhall II. I was no longer an appreciator of deeply connected music, I was an extension, an amplification of this holy vibration. The playlist kept getting better as the day went on, taking me deeper and deeper. Rick Dufay emailed a live guitar solo and put the cherry on top. Wrapped up or encoded in this music is every human emotion, every heart-quaking desire, every bone-splitting pain, every love-tendered salve; in other words the full human experience, which is the new spirituality.

There is new music to be made to keep us all matched up together in this vintage sensuous dimension known as Planet Earth and the fully engaged human journey. I can’t wait....
